History of the Iditarod
The Iditarod race is run today because of the Serum Run in 1925. The Serum Run was a race to get serum from Anchorage to the sick children in Nome. Many children in Nome were diagnosed with diptheria. 20 drivers helped deliver the serum. Kassen was one of these drivers. Kassen's lead dog, Balto, is probably the most remembered dog in the Serum Run, because of his statue in Central Park in New York City.

The Iditarod Trail
The Iditarod trail is divided into two sections: the Northern Trail and the Southern Trail. The Northern Trail is taken on even years and the Southern Trail is taken on odd years. The Northern Trail has 26 checkpoints, while the Southern Trail has 27 checkpoints.

The meaning of the Word "Iditarod"
